Food-making advice sought
As some of you know... I don't cook. Not because I refuse to, but because someone else likes to do it more, it has evolved into... I don't cook.

Or should I say, I cook like a teen-aged boy. Frozen dinners, boxed mac & cheese, canned foods, basic salads. Although I've been known to embellish the salads a bit, and do love to make a good artichoke (which is very easy to make, just hard to eat). Tacos, quesadillas, spaghetti, hot dogs... that's about it.

That being said, I'm alone for 10 days (that previous 5 day sojourn was just a sampler). And I have to provide for myself. For the first 4 days, I've had a hard time regulating my intake, because usually? If I don't make it, I don't eat it. And normally, it would be out of character for me to make something. So I'd mostly eat only what was provided. But now? I gotta make everything I eat. And it opens my eyes to what else I could make, and then eat, and... there you go. Down the rabbit hole, christ-i-hate-belts...

Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah!

I'm making a fruit salad, similar to one I bought at the store called "Berry Melon Medley". Basically, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, and red grapes. I got all that, but will probably go to the store tomorrow for blueberries, raspberries, and oranges. But I need some advice.

I know some fruits turn icky if you don't treat them right. Apples, bananas, avocados come to mind. If I'm making something without those 3 things (but with everything else I've mentioned), do I need to worry about things turning quickly? I want to make a bunch to last 2-4 days, but don't want to waste it. And come on, if you cut up 2 melons, that's a lot of fruit there for one person.

So, can I just toss them all in a bowl & refridgerate them, or do I have to acidify them in some way? I only think I have lemon juice here...

OK, what you are putting in the salad should be fine-none of them turn. HOWEVER: your berries will go slimy pretty quickly. I suggest doing your citrus and melons in one bowl (they will last a long time), and add the mixed berries as you eat it.

A good dressing for a salad like that is yougurt-either plain, or favored-you can even mix a little Grand Marnier and sugar in it for a fancy-schmancy taste!

Lemon juice stops apples from going bad! And other things too, I'm sure.

Save out the berries and add those as you are about to eat. Everything else will be fine.
