That Darned Computer - Happy's Obsession
or what I do between bouts of Real Life
That Darned Computer
Well, I found out what it will cost to get my PC back up and running.

That was for:
$89 - diagnosing the problem (corrupted file structure)
$160 - new OEP WinXP Pro (because I had a bootleg version before, and needed a real version for the IT store to upload, since that was totally corrupted)
$140 - two hours of time to try to recover the contents of my PC so far
$100 - the additional time required to wipe the old drive, install WinXP it again, etc.

I can spend about $1000 and get a new computer that will smoke doors on my old processor & motherboard (swapping out all my newer parts on the current computer and installing the recovered files to the new hard drive).

I'm going to have to reload all programs again, anyway, either way, since they will be gone when the drive is wiped. So that work level will be the same for me either way.

My original computer is a 5 year old Pentium 4 - the first one by HP, actually. It had only been out 2 weeks when I got it (can you say technogeek?). I've since upgraded the memory, added a new hard drive, a upgraded video card, and a Dual Layer DVD burner. The motherboard/processor/memory are the old parts, and are not upgradeable anymore, as they are a very old format (RambosRAM) - which was very good, but now obsolete. I would go from a 1.4 ghz processor to a 3.0, my memory would go from 640 mb to 512 (I could upgrade for more $$), and I'd only gain 20 gb of HD space, unless I upgrade that too. And I really need another monitor anyway, as mine is starting to have artifacts.

So it would probably be more like... $1500, if I get all I want (rough guess).

But I'm soon to have to take 2 weeks off for surgery, and I don't have as much work coming up in July or August, so I worry about what the S.O. will say.

Of course, he's griping about the touchpad on the laptop (since that's all we have), and he's soon to be getting repaid $2000 on a loan, so maybe he'll go for it? Probably not without a lot of yelling.

I'm just waiting for the time to tell him...

$500 just to fix what I have
$1000 to upgrade to a much better computer.

I hope it isn't WWIII here over it.

If you think about it, in the end spending that extra money will be a lot cheaper in the long run. Otherwise stuff will keep happening to the old one and you'll just have to shell out more to pay for it to get fixed.

I'm getting a new comp today. :) I'm very excited, we haven't actually OWNED one since 1991. All of our laptops have been my dad's schools.
