Anita Blake Revisited
6.) The Laughing Corpse (Anita Blake), by Laurell K. Hamilton, 293 pages
Review: I'm continuing to like this series a lot. Total fantasy, being that there are all sorts of were-creatures, vampires, ghouls, and the like, but still a rollicking good read.

When I went to the used bookstore to get this book, I had the following conversation with the middle-aged lady behind the counter:

The woman at the used book store told me "It was a really good series, up until #7."

"Why? What happened then?" I asked.

"They got really... pornographic," she delicately whispered, her voice dropping on the last word.

"Really!?!" I said, excitedly. Somehow, I don't think that's the reaction she expected.

"All the way up until the last one, when she got back on track," she said, primly.

This same sentiment (except not put so prudishly) was given by severina2001 and tootiredtosleep. I can't wait to get to book #7, and see what all the fuss is about!

You would think it's a good kind of pornographic. But when every other paragraph seems to be sex, you end up wanting to throw the books out the window. It was really hard for me to continue the series, as it seemed Laurell was just looking for an excuse to write smut without changing genres.

I completely agree. It gets very dissapointing I think. I like some erotica when it was with certain characters, but when it became common with almost everyone, it got sort of old and I missed the older books. However, I know most of my friends love it the way it is, so I thought I was alone here :)

Definitely keep us in the loop about the pornography!

It does get very erotic rather quickly, it is almost surprising. You get a little in Blue Moon I think it is, but believe me, it just gets more and more. Her latest book actually has a sex scene within the first 2 chapters, something she has never done before since it makes reading in public (what she does at her events) very difficult. I can't wait to read it when it comes out!

And if you like erotic books, I still suggest the Meredith Gentry series by her. It starts out erotic very early on and in the same fantasy genre.

I've only read the first Anita Blake, so I'm not the voice of experience. But a couple of people who've read a lot of the series complained to me that she eventually becomes such a Mary Sue-ish type character they had to stop reading.
