What I've Said Those Close to Me Pick a Day, Any Day All About Me QaF Vault - great fanfic! In Days of Yore In Days of Yore On to the Future On to the Future
Happy's Obsession
or what I do between bouts of Real Life
I'm thinking of re-purposing my dining room. Now, realize, it really hasn't been used as a dining room. For a long time, it had a small desk (with the computer) along one wall, a hutch, and a high bar table in the corner. Pretty much open space, otherwise. Then we brought up the table that had been left in our basement when we moved in (as we had never bought a dining room table), and used it for poker parties & holidays. So, like... 4-5 times in the last year.

And just last week, we saw that we could watch movies on the computer. And we have a 21" monitor, and a killer sound system on it. So the SO suggested we repurpose the dining room into a sitting type room. And if we do that? I want an aquarium, with some pretty little pearlscale goldfish (meaning a 20 gallon one, at least).

So, I was wondering... how many of you would do this? Considering that we are a totally typical American family (of 2), eating dinner either in front of the TV, or at the kitchen banquette? Or should a dining room be left a dining room?

Sorry the print is so small... click on them to see.

i say if u never use that room other than a computer room go for the change. never hurts 2 have another place 2 hang out. otherwise that would just have the room going 2 waste w/ a dining room table n it that never gets used

If you don't use the dinning room as a such why not do this? Looks like a comfortable layout. Besides you'll be closer to the kitchen for snck runs. :)

Looks great to me. I believe in using every bit of your space for what you want, and the heck with the rules. If you don't use a dining room, then the only time you really need one is if/when you're getting ready to sell. In the interim, heck, do what makes you happy. You know?

The other thought is: Projectors are getting cheaper and cheaper these days--would the flexibility of a projector connected to your computer help any?

What about the best of both? Would the SO go for another loveseat? That way when you're entertaining and so forth, you could still have the living room and tv (because, you're not moving the DVR, right?) and then have the dining room/sitting room as well.

Or wait, was that what you were planning on doing? For some reason I thought you were moving the sofa out of the living rooom...

I use my dining room heavily so I wouldn't, at least not in this house. But in the apartment I lived in in NY I never used the dining room and it had the best sunlight in the house. I changed it into a sitting room and loved it. I spent most of my time there. I say go for it.

My dining room is my computer room. I haven't had a dining room table & chairs for years. :)

Why not. . . It's your house and you should use it as it suits your family. Have fun with it.

Our dining room in our new house is my son's art room. I say use the room in a way that you will get the most use out of it!

I love your sitting room idea. You could always get some sort of collapsible table to use when you needed one. Your living room is really long, maybe you have space there at one end.

Here is the compromise that I made.

The younger people in my family are more than happy to do buffet for holiday dinners and sit on couches or where ever. The older generation wants us all to sit at a table together and get upset when we don't. There is no changing them, they are so inflexible. So I've made the decision to honor their wishes with the big table.

My dining room is open on one end to the living room. Instead of filling the entire dining room with a big table, I have a small table and other stuff.

The trick is that my table expands from seating 4 to seating 12 and I can add card tables to the end to stretch it out even further. Matching tablecloths make it work. I sometimes have to move some furniture in the living room out of the way. I can also bring in a long folding table to put on the other side of the living room. I've had sit down dinners for more than 25 at my house.
